Sobhan Dutta The power and beauty of Duttas technique is in his use of color, texture to give volume to the figures and the fluidity of lines and stokes to depict sensuality of the forms. Duttas ability to internalize experience and express it in a style is delightfully refreshing. The cornerstone in his art is the restoration of silence, which he describes as a quality of amazement that we feel in the presence of the world, and an attendant ability to surrender ourselves before its enchantment. Duttas ability to juxtapose contrary emotions, the real and imaginary and the known and unknown, make his art not only a form of self expression but a reflection, of a collective and subjective consciousness. His paintings derive their impact both from their level of detail and from subtle yet furious undercurrent of cool logical analysis that sweeps them up to tantalizing heights. |

Salma Arastu I have been painting for the last thirty some
years. I have traveled and extensively, from My work
conjures together personal memories, cultural history of places where I
lived, religion and mythology, and a good dose of fantasy. The blending
of traditional and contemporary imagery proves that I am striving for a
unique personal expression. Visual elements from numerous cultures,
traditional and modern, Eastern and Western are my tools. I am
attempting to create a world through my art work in which the magic of
communion plays a central role. My subjects include people who, whatever
they do, they do together. They initiate each other, they celebrate
together, they grieve together, they pray together. Each
painting is a celebration of human relationships-mother to child,
husband to wife, individual to community- in their most vulnerable and
private moments. In most paintings, there is a primary, if not singular,
preoccupation with the drawn line that locks fragments of colored
surfaces together in tight, cohesive compositions. There is a cerebral
game of hide and seek, where figures and space bond to show volume and
deny it, all at the same time. In many of my paintings the ambiguity of pictorial space is given. It is line that performs, both as a mark-a continuous impulse-and as a contour that charges space. Smudges of color, defined by the line, float independently into shapes and are held together by the repetitious forms of layered, textured surfaces. My faint and fragile figures, usually devoid of gender, spread out horizontally at the bottom of the canvas or paper and are locked together by the tenacious line quality into an amassed form that represents humanity. And it is a flow of humanity where people are engaged in their day today activities. |

Priyanka Gupta An artist's life and images are often responses to some pressing cultural and historical needs of the time one lives in and the artistic motivation drives the mind into a journey of discovery, exploration and learning. I come from Kolkata, India, also called the 'City of Joy' for its people and the passion with which they lead their lives. This passion has undoubtedly found its way into my own conception and expression of the colors of life through my art. Although I did not have any formal training in Art at the undergraduate level, I have been an avid painter on my own for quite some time. I practiced in Kolkata under the guidance of Wasim Kapoor and Partha Bhattacharjee where I had the opportunity to observe these gifted artists put together their thoughts on canvas in as natural a fashion as can be. The most important principle imbibed into me right then was that freedom of style and expression is the sincerest form of training in art. That art which emerges from the innermost depths of our human faculties of emotion is vastly satisfying for the artist. My art at that time emerged as being gestural and bent towards expressing both an inner spiritual truth that lies beyond the immediate nature of the visual world, and the emotive, psychological and mystical appeal of pure color. I enjoyed quite a bit of success as an amateur artist - my solo exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kolkata, 2004 was widely appreciated by leading art critics like Samir Dasgupta. I have also had the opportunity to showcase my works at a few charitable exhibition auctions by Concern India Foundation and international exhibitions like Visual Aid, the Lab and Works/San Jose, which have been very encouraging. I recently graduated from San Francisco Art Institute completing the Post Baccalaureate program where my style matured and found a solid ground for expression. Through my works, I attempt to bridge the cultural gaps between the eastern and western worlds that I inhabit and express the subtle strength of women and explore feminism and spirituality in the context of Indian society. more about the artist |
